Amoxicillin

Amoxicillin is a penicillin-based antibiotic drug taken in capsule form and used for a range of infections. It works by preventing the growth and spread of bacteria.

In most cases, your children will take amoxicillin orally in a 250 mg or 500 mg capsule, and sometimes 125 mg for kids. Depending on your child’s condition, your doctor will direct for the medication to be taken with or without food, around two to three times a day.

If your child finds swallowing tablets difficult, amoxicillin is offered in liquid form, but it can stain teeth.

Benadryl

Benadryl is diphenhydramine, an antihistamine that immediately relieves symptoms of allergy, sneezing, coughing and hives. It’s also used to prevent motion sickness. Benadryl can be taken orally in tablet, capsule or liquid form; and it can be applied topically as a gel or cream. Benadryl should not be taken by children under six years old unless directed by a Pediatrician.

Ventolin

Ventolin is a bronchodilator used to both treat and prevent wheezing and shortness of breath. It works by relaxing and opening up the airways in the lungs. It’s most commonly used to treat asthma attacks and other breathing problems/airway diseases.

Ritalin

Methylphenidate (also known as Ritalin) is a stimulant medication used to treat children with Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder (ADHD). It works by stimulating the nervous system and calming brain activity down, which makes it easier to focus. It also decreases the tendency for impulsive behaviour by curbing sleepiness.

It’s taken orally, usually 2-3 times per day, 30-45 minutes before eating and is not suitable for children under six years old. It’s also unsuitable in the following situations:
Dosage will depend on your child's ADHD and how they react to it. Your Pediatrician may adjust dosage regularly depending on symptoms or progress.

Concerta

Concerta is used to treat Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder (ADHD). It works by stimulating the nervous system and hormones like dopamine and norepinephrine to calm a child’s brain so they can focus more easily. It also decreases the tendency for impulsive behaviour.

It’s taken orally once a day in the morning at 27mg, 54mg, or 72 mg; and it can only be swallowed whole with water or other liquids. It’s not indicated for children under six years old and is unsuitable in the following situations:

Vyvanse

Vyvanse is also known as Lisdexamfetamine. It’s a prescription drug used to treat Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder (ADHD). It works by restoring the balance of certain natural brain chemicals which could increase your child’s ability to pay attention, stay focused and stop fidgeting. Vyvanse may also be used to treat binge eating disorder and can be an effective treatment when combined with other treatments such as psychological and social therapies.

Vyvanse is taken in pill form, usually once daily in the morning and should not be taken in the afternoon or evening because it may cause trouble sleeping. It should not be taken by anyone presenting with:

Hydrocortisone

Hydrocortisone is a mild corticosteroid used to treat skin conditions like insect bites, poison oak/ivy, eczema, dermatitis, allergies, rash and itching by reducing the swelling, itching, and redness.

2-3 Times a day

Hydrocortisone is applied topically in the form of cream on the affected area of the skin. It’s not recommended for children with diabetes, low thyroid levels or fungal infections unless otherwise prescribed by a doctor.

Dexamethasone

Dexamethasone weakens the immune system responses to diseases, reducing symptoms, swelling and allergic-type reactions. It’s used to treat conditions such as arthritis, blood/hormone disorders, allergic reactions, skin diseases, eye problems, breathing problems, bowel disorders, cancer and immune system disorders.

Tylenol (Acetaminophen)

Tylenol (aka: acetaminophen) is used to treat mild to moderate pain from headaches, menstrual periods, toothaches, backaches, osteoarthritis, or cold/flu aches and pains; and to reduce fever. It succeeds by elevating the pain threshold so a greater amount of pain can develop before your child feels it.

Children should not take this medication for fever for more than 3 days unless directed by a doctor.

Advil (Ibuprofen)

Also called Ibuprofen, Advil is a nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drug (NSAID) used to relieve pain. It works by blocking the body from producing certain natural substances that cause inflammation. This effect helps to decrease swelling, pain, or fever. It’s used to relieve pain from conditions such as headaches, dental pain, menstrual cramps, muscle aches, or arthritis.
